Product Review: Safe Glow LED Dog Collar

December 13, 2012 | Filed under: Pet Products

Back in August, I was contacted by DogTrainingCollars.com about doing a review of their Safe Glow LED Dog Collar. It took me about a week to respond that yes, I’d love to, and let them know what size I needed (medium). I didn’t hear back from them by email, so I figured it had just taken me too long to reply, and I moved on.

So imagine my surprise when in October, I got a package addressed to Life by Pets and it contained a collar. I was even more surprised when I realized the collar was a large. I went back and double checked the email I sent in with my size request to make sure the mistake wasn’t mine. It wasn’t.

No glow

The biggest problem with getting the wrong size collar is that I can’t really do a complete review of it. Even at its smallest size, Junebug could back out of it if she tried, and her neck and head are both larger than Larry’s and Howie’s. That meant I couldn’t attach a leash to it and be certain I would keep my dog.

004But I loved the LED glow. It can blink at a fast or slow pace, or be a steady glow. With winter coming on, I still felt it could be quite useful to us. And it was. We put it on Junebug for some walks after dark (since it gets dark at 5pm right now). Being that she’s our dog with the least amount of white on her, it made me feel better about her visibility. (We also carry a small flashlight and wear light colored clothing ourselves, but the dogs like to wander at the far end of their 6’ leashes.) Since we use harnesses for their walks, the fact that the collar was too big didn’t matter.

One night, there were people at the end of the street and they all commented on how neat the collar was and how it definitely made June more visible than the other dogs.
Here are the things I like about the Safe Glow LED Dog Collar003

  • Made of a sturdy, water resistant material (good enough for walking in the rain- not good enough for swimming- but we don’t go swimming)
  • The large size will actually fit a wide range of dogs
  • The glow is easily visible and not harsh on the eyes
  • The LED is easy to turn off and on, even while the dog is wearing the collar

The one thing I don’t like is that when it’s at its full size, the glowing part only covers about half of the collar, so if it gets turned to be under your dog’s neck, it’s not as easily visible.

And what I couldn’t really test was how well it handled pulling (since my dogs pull). I have a concern about this because the metal ring doesn’t span the width of the collar. It is attached on one side, so it’s more like it’s parallel to the collar. I’m concerned that that could cause the collar to dig unevenly into a dog’s neck.

For the way we are using the collar, though, as long as I make sure the glowing part is on the top of June’s neck, it works perfectly for us, and we’ll definitely keep using it.

(The pictures below have Larry as a model because it’s easier to get him to sit still, and the collar showed up so nicely against his white neck.)

I've looked at the little glowing orbs you can add to your dog's collar, I wish that Dog Training Collars didn't sell shock collars too, because I might be inclined to buy LED collars for both dogs, especially now since it gets dark so early.

I have to admit, I've tried a shock collar, and used the pinch collars. The shock collar upset us more than it did the dog (who it also had the exact opposite effect it was supposed to have on)

On a side note, are you seeing the RaffleCopter widget? It's not showing on my screen at work, but that might be because I'm stuck using a really old browser, but I was having this problem last night, too…

I get daytime walking duties; the guy takes the dogs out at night. We don't live in such a great neighborhood, and drivers are extremely irresponsible. I feel like increasing the dogs' visibility by putting a lighted collar on at least one dog would help. It could also backfire by making the walking crew more visible to muggers from a distance. That thought is the main reason we haven't actually equipped the Bows with lit-up devices yet.
