Seattle is a No-Kill Community
Back in March, I encouraged people to vote for Seattle in the GoPetFriendly.com March Madness tournament for the best dog city in the country. Seattle lost to Portland, OR in our bracket. I’m over it, I really am, but I’m here today to give you another reason why Seattle is actually one of the best cities for dogs in the country.
On Sunday, the No Kill Communities blog announced that Seattle has reached the status of being a No Kill Community. In 2010, the Seattle Animal Shelter (I have a friend who volunteers there) and the Humane Society for Seattle/King County (where we adopted Larry) managed to achieve a combined 91% live release rate for animals taken in to the two shelters. This makes Seattle the 2nd largest no-kill city in the country. (note: this refers to the city of Seattle only, not the entire metro area. Austin is a bigger city and is therefore the largest no-kill community in the country- go Austin.)
And if you read the comments, you’ll find out that King County Regional Animal Services is currently at an 89% save rate. We’re getting there, and it’s make the Seattle area one of the most pet friendly places in the country, and a place I am proud to call home.
I’m also pleased to mention that our former home area- Reno, Sparks, and Washoe county as a whole, have also achieved documented no-kill status.
