Seattle is a No-Kill Community

October 18, 2012 | Filed under: Stories

Back in March, I encouraged people to vote for Seattle in the GoPetFriendly.com March Madness tournament for the best dog city in the country. Seattle lost to Portland, OR in our bracket. I’m over it, I really am, but I’m here today to give you another reason why Seattle is actually one of the best cities for dogs in the country.

On Sunday, the No Kill Communities blog announced that Seattle has reached the status of being a No Kill Community. In 2010, the Seattle Animal Shelter (I have a friend who volunteers there) and the Humane Society for Seattle/King County (where we adopted Larry) managed to achieve a combined 91% live release rate for animals taken in to the two shelters. This makes Seattle the 2nd largest no-kill city in the country. (note: this refers to the city of Seattle only, not the entire metro area. Austin is a bigger city and is therefore the largest no-kill community in the country- go Austin.)

And if you read the comments, you’ll find out that King County Regional Animal Services is currently at an 89% save rate. We’re getting there, and it’s make the Seattle area one of the most pet friendly places in the country, and a place I am proud to call home.

I’m also pleased to mention that our former home area- Reno, Sparks, and Washoe county as a whole, have also achieved documented no-kill status.

This is tremendous! I guess I don't feel too badly any more about Halifax losing to Seattle, though we are on our way to no-kill as well. In fact, the Nova Scotia SPCA is the only actual no-kill-labeled organization in Canada. Of course, our entire province is probably smaller than the city of Seattle. But we're getting there. 🙂 Congratulations!

Congrats on having a no-kill labeled organization. That's fabulous, too.

This is a really sucky work for me (pretty much all work related) and this is the one bright spot I'm holding on to

This is wonderful news and something EVERY community should be striving to achieve. Kudos to you Seattle, set the bar and set it high!!

Woo hoo! It's great to hear about big cities that are becoming no-kill. The challenges are so great and it's fabulous to see success.

This is fantastic news!! We'll be doing another March Madness tournament – this could push Seattle over the top. =)
