Diet Change

October 9, 2012 | Filed under: Pet Health, Problem Behaviors

The dogs have absolutely loved their newish diet of half kibble, half brown rice and chicken. The only problem is, June’s tummy hasn’t quite loved it as much as her taste buds. She hasn’t been stinky, just poopy multiple times a day with half of it not solid. (More than you wanted to know, I know.) But we know they would all be very sad if we stopped giving them the yummy stuff. (Because yes, they are spoiled. I take full responsibility.)

But we needed to make a change. This weekend, we dropped the brown rice and added sweet potato. So far so good.  All the dogs are loving it, especially Howie. In fact, he licked the sweet potato off the edge of his bowl before going after the chicken.

The only problem appears to be that they all like it too much. That, and even mushed up, it’s a little harder to eat than brown rice- in that it takes more time. Larry has been our slowest eating dog already, and this slows him down even more. We’d been feeding him just inside our bedroom door next to the water. Unfortunately, this meant that either Howie couldn’t come into the room until Larry was done, or Larry attacked him when he tried to walk in. (Yes, they like it so much Larry has become food aggressive.)

Our solution for now has been to move Larry’s food dish away from the door so that June and Howie can come and go even while he takes his time.

Oh, and as for June’s tummy, we’re also so far so good.

I'm surprised actually that the rice has been causing distress, that is normally something they tell you to give to stop the loosie juicies. It could be all the fiber in the sweet potato though.

    Glad she is feeling better!

Yeah, chicken and brown rice was what was always recommended when she had some more serious tummy troubles, and since the dogs loved it, we just stuck with it. June wasn't feeling any kind of tummy distress, her output just wasn't near as solid as we thought it should be. Right now, the yams seem to be dealing with that, but it's also been less than a week, so we'll have to see how things go long term.

I'm not surprised to see you're getting better results without the brown rice. Although it's often recommended by vets, I always found it was very digestible for my dogs. When I was making homemade meals, I used oatmeal and found it worked much better.

BTW, pumpkin is a great additive to improve digestion. Sounds like the sweet potato worked well for you.
