Would you buy this?

September 20, 2012 | Filed under: Dog Science, Pet Health

This picture has nothing to do with the post, but I don’t use nearly enough pictures of my Moree dog.

As most of you know, I am as involved in the personal finance blogosphere as I am the pet blog arena. I am also active on some personal finance message boards. Today, one of the other posters there posted a link to his indiegogo site where he is trying to raise money for an invention he has. Here is the link. I don’t expect you to fund anything. I don’t even really expect you to click on the link. I’m providing it so if you’re interested in reading the actual inventor’s perspective.

What I am interested in, is would you buy this product if it existed.

So what’s the product? It’s a cooling system for your car that runs even when the car isn’t on and keeps your dog from getting heat stroke.

The basic idea is that it is a cooling pad (as opposed to heating pad) with a fan/cooling system that runs off your car’s power when the engine is on and off a rechargeable battery when the engine is turned off.

The inventor views it as a health and safety product for pets. Others on the personal finance message board saw it as a luxury product. I can see both arguments. For me, it would be a luxury product because my dogs don’t need to go everywhere with me. In fact, they rarely go anywhere other than the dog park, the vet, or the occasional trip to PetsMart.

But there are people who take their dogs places. There are people who leave their dogs in hot cars while they just run into Target for one thing. The question is, would most of those people actually pay for this product?

Based on the donation gifts here, I’d guess that price point for the device will be around $200, or more, retail.

While I know that as a nation, we are spending more and more on our pets, but are the majority of people really willing to spend $200 for a situation they just don’t really see happening?

To me, the ideal market would be dog show or agility people, maybe those with therapy dogs- people who are most likely to be out and about with their dogs already and are more likely to need to run an errand while their dogs are with them.

For those folks, I can see this being thought of as a product that solves a health and safety issue.

One other thought that came from the finance boards was that the product would need to come with a window sticker (or something) that said “this pet kept cool by…” to prevent other animal lovers from calling the cops/animal control, or even breaking your windows out of concern for your dog.

But I come back to my original question, since pet bloggers tend to be pretty obsessed with our dogs and their health and safety, but most (at least of the blogs I read) also seem pretty practical- would you buy this, if it were on the market?

I probably wouldn't buy it because like you I'm not in a position where my dogs go everywhere with me. But I can see the benefit for the dog show people. If I were showing Delilah it would be something I purchase because she is so unpredictable around other dogs, I wouldn't want to chance it at a show and would have to leave her in the car.

I didn't click the link, but I can see the appeal of it. However I won't spend $200 on a bed that they would sleep on 90% of the time! 🙂

I don't spend $200 on our bed (but that's because the roomie works for a company that makes memory foam mattresses and we get uncovered ones at cost).

I really think he needs to rethink his marketing position, if he ever makes it that far. It's too expensive for the casual dog owner to buy, and most people who would spend that much money on their dogs are likely to be people who don't take their dogs places in the heat unless it's an absolute necessity and already plan ahead for that.

No, I wouldn't buy it either. It's easier to keep Honey home when it's not safe to have her with me. Besides, any mechanical device could fail leaving my dog to bake without my knowing it.

However, I think you were right on the money when you talked about dog show people. And, if this inventor has connections to dog shows, agility trials, hunt trials, and other dog-related competitions, he might be onto something.

When he mentioned where he was posting links to it (trying to get funding), he didn't mention anything about dog show/trial specific locations, and I did my best to direct him that way. I do like his idea of donating some to local K9 units, but I'm not certain if they would actually be practical for police use.

I thought one of my Shiba friends who does a lot of trials and competitions with her dogs already had something similar to this. Doesn't sound quite as fancy, but there is a desire for some kind of contraption like this.

I would consider $200 a very worthwhile expenditure for a cross-country move by car in the summer — which I've had to do before with one dog, but three people. So we were each able to take turns accompanying Bowdu while someone fetched food or gas or snacks or directions or whatever was needed inside a building where pets were not allowed. But had it just been me, and I needed to use the bathroom or something? I wouldn't really be able to do it without something like this, not in some of those states I passed through in the middle of August…

I would also pay several hundred dollars for a fancy airline-approved carrier if it had such a temperature control/cooling mechanism.

But for my day-to-day lifestyle? No. I only leave the dogs in the car at some very specific safe locations around town, only for a few minutes, and I definitely wouldn't leave them in there with any piece of technology that was worth $200 in one smash-and-grab! In light of that, a sticker announcing the expensive object inside the car is probably not such a good idea…
