Take a Look Around

August 28, 2012 | Filed under: Pictures

I am a lucky person to live in the Seattle area. I’ve talked about it before when Go Pet Friendly was having their competition for the most pet friendly cities, but today, I’m not even talking about the abundace of off leash and pet friendly areas. I’m talking about the amazing number of places I have to go see wild animals, in amazing settings.

Within an hour’s drive of us, we have 4- count them, 4 zoos, aquariums, or wildlife parks.

First and most famous is Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo. Many years ago, when I lived in MT, but my grandparents lived in the Seattle area, my mother brought my brother and I to the zoo. What I remember about it from that time was that the paths were all dirt, a very fine dirt, and my brother is allergic to dust. We had to leave early because his eyes swelled shut.

Now, if you go, you may have the chance to see Snow Leopard Cubs.

Along Seattle’s waterfront, there is the Seattle Aquarium. And they have otter cams.

Drive a little ways south, toward Tacoma, and you’ll get to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. They’ve got a great breeding program and in place and this spring welcomed Clouded Leopard cubs and a litter of Red Wolf pups.

And finally, just a little further south (in fact, right by where C and I had our first home) is Northwest Trek Wildlife Park.

And for the record, I have been to all of these places except Northwest Trek- something which needs to be rectified.

What about you? What options to see wild animals do you have in your neck of the woods?

Only what I see in my woods. LOL If there are any, I'm not aware of them.

I used to live in eastern MT, and we didn't have anything there, either. We really are blessed here, especially since we're also very near a number of state and national parks where we can see truly wild wildlife.

Those snow leopard cubs are too precious. We have an African Lion Safari within two hours of here (up north in Canada). But my favorite are wildlife sanctuaries where the entire ecosystem is left as untouched as possible and allowed to thrive.

Northwest Trek is much more like a sanctuary. The animals are all native to the area, and with the exception of getting veterinary care (sometimes), and possibly food during really bad winters, the only real intrusion is the bus paths through the area.

Snow leopards! What beautiful animals they are.

There aren't many parks or zoos in my area that I would recommend. In fact, I can only think of one worth visiting and that is the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, which is run by the provincial department of natural resources. The animals are all native to the province and most of them were rescued and could not be returned to the wild.

I do love the snow leopards. We haven't had a chance to go see them yet, but now that the weather is cooling down, maybe we'll head over to the zoo.

Your local wildlife park sounds like a pretty neat place

I honestly don't go to zoos very often, but I think about it. Just never seem to make time for it…
I love that the regional parks offices create full, downloadable guides of native wildlife in the area, so you can go look for birds and critters in their natural habitats!

Also, we supposedly have a hyena colony up in the hills, available to university researchers and ethologists. Seriously, wow. The financial status of the colony was uncertain last I checked… I should find out what's the current situation.

I go to zoos (and aquariums) because I have friends with kids. Oh, and because it's so much fun to go.

I'll bet the hyena colony is neat, but it's best if only the scientists actually know where it is.
