An Update on Howie

August 21, 2012 | Filed under: Fostering, Problem Behaviors and tagged with: howie

My guess is that Howie, if he became an only dog, would have terrible separation anxiety. The only thing he ever seems concerned about is being left behind. On Saturday, Larry and June needed a dog park trip. C wasn’t feeling very well, though, and I can’t quite manage all three dogs on my own, so I made sure to get Howie back in bed with C and took the other two to the park.

Then on Sunday, we didn’t have time for the dog park, so I decided to take Larry for a walk (he’s been a little crazy lately). C had to come and hold Howie back so that Larry and I could leave the house.

When Larry and I got back, I decided to take Howie and June for a short walk just to try and make them a little happier.

I had thought it worked, but apparently not.

Today, I thought we had some errands to run, and we planned on going to the dog park. I thought we were going to the park first and got out the leashes and harnesses. Then C came out and said he wanted to do the shopping first. I put the harnesses away and we headed out of the house.

Howie, however, was not about to be left behind. He darted out the front door and headed straight to the car we take the dogs in. We had to carry him back in the house.

Luckily, as long as he is left with the other dogs (or with someone home), he does just fine.

When I had two dogs, I wished I had done more when they were young to separate them. When I read Tales and Tails, they take different dogs out depending on the situation. None of them seem to be too bothered being left behind.

My guess is you can work on this but it probably will be tough. Poor Howie. He just wants to be with the gang.

Given that he's 12, and the rescue is considering him not really adoptable, I'm not certain how much work I'm willing to put into it. I just don't see much point in putting him through the stress of being left totally alone when I don't really see any reason when he would need to be.

If the rescue were more focused on getting him adopted, I'd probably put some effort into it, but for now, there's always at least one person or other dog with him at all times.

Well hopefully if he gets adopted, the family will have another dog. Poor Howie! Actually, I don't really feel bad for him because I know he is quite spoiled and treated very well! 🙂

I like the new layout of your site, btw.

Because the rescue's theory on him getting adopted is that it will happen if we bring someone in that really wants him, I really do have control over making sure he goes somewhere where he will have pretty constant company.

And thank you. I made changes to all of my sites lately, and this is the change I'm most happy with.
