Saving the English Bulldog
I have written here before about the problems with the English Bulldog breed. They have a great temperament, but so many health issues (including the fact that they all have to be born via c-section), that I find it irresponsible to continue the breed. Well, the other day at the dog park, we may have found the savior of the English Bulldog.
She was a Bulldog Boston Terrier mix, and about as cute as could be. According to the owner, she and the rest of her litter (the original breeder was a friend of his) had very few health problems. She had much of the look of a Bulldog, but with a slightly smaller head and longer legs. She had gorgeous white and brindle markings and a fabulous puppy personality.
I know that “mixed” breeds go against everything the AKC thinks they stand for (even though almost all established breeds started out as mixed breeds), but continuing a breed that can’t survive on its own IS against what they claim they stand for (even if they won’t admit it). If English Bulldog breeders honestly want to continue the breed in a healthy fashion, its time they considered adding some “new” blood in there. And Boston Terrier seems to be a great combo.
