Let me at ’em, let me at ’em
Larry has no concept of his size. Junebug likes mostly to play with dogs close to her size, though she’ll chase anyone that’s running fast enough. But Larry, Larry likes to go after the big boys. Rotts and GSDs are common “opponents” for him to have- he tries to mount them and show his dominance. Luckily, most big dogs appear more confused about what’s happening than annoyed.
But more than any other kind of dog, Larry wants to go after the sled dogs- Huskies, Malamutes, etc. Who knows if it’s the coloring, the coat patterns, or the fluffiness. It doesn’t matter how big or small, if it’s a sled type dog, you can bet Larry will be in its face.
Again, the big dogs seem more confused than anything. They’ll just keep walking while Larry tries to get in their faces. They keep looking around trying to figure out how they’re supposed to respond to such an obvious non-threat.
However, the other day at the dog park, there was a small sled dog – most likely a mix of some sort. Who did respond to Larry’s antics, and not so much in a lets play kind of way. C ended up picking Larry up to break things up (no one was close to being hurt, but it was obvious from doggy body language that things weren’t going to stay friendly without intervention). The little sled dog kept barking, so two of his much larger friends came over to investigate, at which point Larry could not be contained.
But, as usual, the big dogs were just interested in sniffing and moving on.
That is my only concern with Larry at the dog park. One of these days, he’s going to start something with a big dog that actually reacts.
