Yet Another 3rd Dog
Last weekend we almost ended up with a 3rd dog for real, as were at PetCo during an adoption event. There were two little doggies that we adored, but at a minimum adoption fee of $500, it was a bit much for an impulse purchase. (I will note that I have no problem with the fee- the private rescue is NOT making money, and also think its probably a good thing that dogs aren’t impulse purchases.)
In order to get me over my “new doggy” desire, we are watching Marley for the first time. He’s all of 5lbs, but doesn’t know it. He’s a little smaller than our ideal would be, though its very convenient to have a dog you can carry around in one hand.
Marley is not used to being around other dogs. He’s also used to having 3 humans to himself instead of having to share 2 humans between 3 dogs, so we’re having a bit of an adjustment.
For the most part, he and June play pretty well, though they both have a desire to play on the bed/on us, which isn’t the best situation. It also puts them trampling Smokey, who isn’t thrilled with that idea.
Luckily, Smokey is a GOOD dog. He was told early on that he wasn’t allowed to be too crotchety with the little dog and has understood that well. It doesn’t help when every once in a while, Marley thinks he can treat Smokey the same way he treats June. Snapping at Smokey for having his face near by does not result in play; it results in a grumpy dog who could bite the little one in half. Smokey, however, is very good at looking to us to deal with the issue instead of solving it himself.
So doggies are adapting very well. Now, if we could just learn Marley’s cues better (like is he hungry, does he need out), we’d be set.
